Lewton, Death and Death of Rats - Discworld Noir (1999)
I’m sure someone will correct me and tell me that Death of Rats never appears in the game, but screw it.. He’s cute and I like him.

Update Time! Not a regular post, but a commission. Here’s a cover I did for an e-zine called Thrillville Quarterly. It’s about LucasArts and adventure games, so you should go read it!

- MONKEY WEEK day 4 -
Guybrush & Puppet Pirate LeChuck - Escape from Monkey Island (2000)
The last Monkey Island game from LucasArts and the last, new adventure game they developed.
- MONKEY WEEK day 3 -
Guybrush Threepwood & Chicken & Grog - The Curse of Monkey Island (1997)
The third game in the series, complete with amazing hand-drawn high resolution art. Without Ron Gilbert at the helm, the real secret of Monkey Island was never to be revealed, but the third game was nonetheless a stellar example of the adventure game genre.

King Arthur & The Black Knight - Conquests of Camelot: The Search for the Grail (1989)
Christy Marx’s epic game, featuring jousting, magic riddle stones and soul points.

Larry Laffer - Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (1987)
My clearest memory of this game is how I’d played this when I was too young and during dinner I asked the grownups: “Why did Larry’s crotch turn red after he had sex with the stripper?”
You can still be a part of helping Al Lowe, the creator himself, bring Larry back to life, via this Kickstarter.
George Stobbart - Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars (1996)
Revolution Software’s breakout hit. I remember playing this for the first time on a friend’s PlayStation. It was quite hard to control on a gamepad, but the story and characters distracted my young mind from that immediately.

Syd, Bernard, Razor & the Edisons - Maniac Mansion (1987)
Save the cheerleader, save the world. This game scared the crap out of me the first time Edna snuck up on me. Crazy old hag..

Roger Wilco - Space Quest series (1986 - 1995)
I realized that I hadn’t done any of the Quest series. So here’s Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy’s Roger Wilco. This space janitor will always have a place in my heart, if only for the fact that he at one point travels to his own sequel.
Also, hello to all the new followers. Thanks for stopping by.

Robert Cath - The Last Express (1997)
Jordan Mechner’s stunning train mystery really grabbed me back then. It still looks pretty great and really sidestepped the horrible FMV look of games of that era. That it all happens in a small space aboard a train, makes it even greater.

Bobbin Threadbare - Loom (1990)
Brian Moriarty’s musical adventure. I can’t remember if I ever finished this game. I remember it being a bit hard, actually.

Klaymen - The Neverhood (1996)
Doug TenNapel’s literally hand-crafted adventure game looked amazing back then and still does, thanks to creative character design and the charming clay look. The moment pictured above was the first of many long, hilarious cinematics I encountered in the game.

Bernard, Laverne, Hogie and Purple Tentacle - Day of the Tentacle (1993)
To end this week, another classic from Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. This is possibly my favorite game ever and has some of the best game design ever to grace the genre.
Torin and Boogle - Torin’s Passage (1995)
Al Lowe’s weird fairytale adventure game. I have such fond memories of this from when it came out. One of the adventure games I played through with a friend. The game’s art director, James G. Murphy, is now a lead animator at Pixar.

Boston Low, Maggie Robbins and Dr. Ludger Brink - The Dig (1995)
Such an amazingly ambitious game. Mysterious alien planet to explore and obscure glowing stick puzzles to solve..
